If there is one lesson that the world can learn from the catastrophe that COVID-19 has wrought on Italy where the death toll has crossed China’s, it is that early preventive measures like self isolation and quarantine go a long way in preventing the spread of the deadly diseases. If immediate steps are taken to cut the transmission chains of the virus, there is no way that the infection will spread. The Jammu and Kashmir administration’s decision to close down all the borders and the central government’s move to suspend the air traffic is a significant measure which will help in overcoming the corona virus crisis that has brought the entire humanity on its knees. According to officials, the border of Jammu and Kashmir with Ladakh and Punjab has been shut till March 31. Similarly dated ban has also been imposed on air traffic which is known to have spread the virus across the globe. The experience of China and the western countries, particularly Italy, has shown that the virus can be contained without causing much damage to humans. But it needs the will and commitment of the official machinery to impose some harsh and often unpopular decisions in order to minimize the risk. Imposing Section 144 is one way of trampling on the transmission pathways of corona virus. But it can’t be the sole way. People have an important role in this. The government has already shut down all the business and even government employees have been asked to work on alternate weeks. Now it is up to the people to follow the government orders in letter and spirit so that the infection doesn’t spread. Scientific research shows that infected persons can take up to 20 days before the symptoms of the deadly disease start showing up. With the help of the civil society, if the government imposes strict restrictions in Jammu and Kashmir, we all decide to stay at home and don’t venture out unnecessarily, there is no reason why we should not win the fight against novel corona virus. The government alone can’t stop this pandemic from spreading in J&K. What we are facing today is probably the humanity’s biggest crisis. And every crisis has shown that humans are a superior species. All we need to do is to become responsible, realize our duties towards the society and act with maturity by following the guidelines issued by the government and various health organizations. In doing so, we will do a favor not only to ourselves but to the entire humanity.
