Stop Burglaries

January 23, 2022 |

Burglaries are taking place across Kashmir with no respite for the victims who continue to lose precious valuables and hard earned cash kept for emergencies during Covid-19 situation which is changing every now and then. Police on its part is engaged in a multi-pronged approach in dealing crimes, including burglaries but thieves have adopted novel means and methods to strike on their will by targeting vulnerable victims, including elderly and lonely. Mostly these acts are undertaken by someone keeping track of the households during day time and striking in the night. They act on their own choice by decamping with valuables worth lakhs. Kashmiris have a traditional habit of stocking cash and ornaments in their homes due to a situation they have been into for decades when uncertainty prevailed all over and dumping them in banks was thought to be risky. Due to scale of poverty and subjugation during pre-independence era, the crime scene in terms of thefts was at its peak and villages in rural belt and mohallas in urban setting used to have organized gangs of thieves who used to loot houses and caravans during daytime and no to talk of night period when males of the mohallas used to patrol their areas to prevent burglaries. The entire scenario changed once strict policing was adhered to in early 1970s and afterwards as administration recognized it as major criminal activity. During the 1980s there was a sharp decline in thefts as police busted gangs and recovered the stolen items and money. It was during this phase which saw Jammu and Kashmir Police assuming role of force to reckon with in dealing criminal activities as compared to rest of their compatriots in the country. It was during the 1990s that burglaries witnessed drop due to militancy as burglars who were generally active at night took to other forays fearing for their life as it was only security forces or militants roaming around in the dark. With militancy on the decline as police prioritized terrorism as the major challenge being faced by it. The police using its prowess to end it did manage to check and curb to an extent that thieves roam in front of CCTVs during dark hours to strike in multiple places as indicated by its report of arresting scores of accused in burglaries. The difference in the scale and motives of these criminals could be gauged from the fact that they don’t spare places of reverence like shrines, mosques, dargahs and khanqahs from being on their target list which is very dangerous and should be immediately curbed and stopped. Otherwise the trend would assume a dangerous dimension due to the sacredness of these spots and the public are seeking responses as to why these burglars are not being arrested after hurting the sentiments of people as they loot the donation boxes of shrines and masjids.
