Students Role in Saving Dal Lake

Human beings play a key role to maintain the ecological balance because they have the highest thinking capacity as compared to other living species

October 14, 2021 | Dr Sheikh Arshid Ahmad

The environment comprises of different types of living organisms and contributing the ecosystem to build a balanced environment that stabilizes the coexistence of all living organisms. The different species develop a harmonious relationship reflect the healthy and desirable ecological balance. Human beings play a key role to maintain the ecological balance because they have the highest thinking capacity as compared to other living species.

The stability in the coexistence created on the biological association has been continuously contaminated and decimated by human beings by throwing litter and sewage. The global warming has also badly effected the ecological balance between the biotic and abiotic factors. Thinning
of the ozone layer and the increase in the emission of greenhouse gases seemed to be the main source of global warming.
The water pollution has severely affected the aquatic life and all the water bodies have to face biological oxygen demand(BOD) and disturbed their lives. Soil erosion is one of the few regional outcomes which resulted the wash out of the fertile layer of the upper surface of the earth. This has also done by human activities, resulted in abrupt fall of yield and quality of the soil.
The environmental education is the comprehensive and continuing process that has deep roots. It has broad interdisciplinary base which cause every individual of the society to be aware about the situation of the environment. This helps an individual to be practically involved to sort out the grave concern of the environment. At an individual and social level various remedial steps have been taken to control the contamination of the environment.
In today's world ,the environmental education has multifaceted aspects and exposes every step of life. It aims to assist every individual to develop an understanding that people are inseparable parts of an environment that whatever they do can alter their surroundings in both harmful and beneficial ways.
Therefore, our voice around every corner of the society is essential for environmental protection and its management. It is a right step to teach people of the society that how to utilize present and future resources. It is the environmental education through all people can gain knowledge of correcting the fundamental issues leading to local pollution.
In environmental education, people are utilised directly with the action even using the science and technological methods in order to maintain the environment free from pollution. It provides the necessary skills and specialized knowledge to meet
the challenges related to it. The main purpose of this education is to create awareness, to develop the kind of attitude for proper contemplation and meditation in order to control the environmental challenges.
The present era found expression in the proclamation made to ‘Defend and improve the environment for the present and future generations of all nations of the world'. Now the environmental problems have attracted the attention of a world cross- section of people and started to create awareness and raising funds to clean up the environment.
The Kashmir is treated to have great tourist attraction that is Dal Lake. It is now turning into contaminated area as every kind of pollutant such as litter, sewage, effluent and other disposals are throwing without knowing its consequences in future. The disposal of sewage and weed growth have started the Dal lake
automatically encroached due to unusual throwing of about 97,000 kg of sewage every day. It is estimated that besides nitrates and phosphates, about 80,000 tonnes of silt get deposited in the lake every year.
The rising sewage discharge from the localities especially to the east and west side has impressed negatively on the mindset of tourists.
On the western side of the lake ,the extensive growth of weed has stopped the entry of sunlight to the lower level of Dal Lake this result in eutrophication and inturn effected the ecosystem of water body. Lakhs of rupees are spent every year to remove the garbage and uneven growth of weeds but job has not yet finished.
The Dal lake may be the first place that comes into the mind of everyone who wishes to visit Kashmir. Its faded beauty has turned every one into protestation and anger but no body thinks it's remedial features. The Government including non-governmental organisations along with the students from local schools organized rallies on saving Dal lake. Everyone has taken its efforts to rid the lake from solid waste and it's continuous contamination.
The School children, the future of Kashmir, play a vital role as environmental campaigners to save the Dal lake. The students can easily understand the situation that can put bad effect on the future of the Dal Lake.
Dal Lake is fed by springs emerging from the surrounding hills of Pir Panjal range and thousands of people live on and around this lake for times immemorial.
The students can organise different programs on saving Dal Lake and can organise debates, seminars, conferences and workshops. These events can be helpful in getting back the original scenic beauty of the the Dal Lake.
Some of the important features can be adapted in saving Dal lake, these are as:

1. Active Part in Cleaning Drive

To make the Dal lake free from pollution, school children should take active part in cleaning drive.

2. Develop Positive Understanding

School children should acquire basic understanding of the total environment and associated problems then only our future generations can be helpful in getting the Dal lake and other environmental problems free from pollution.

3.Attitudes and Stick on Elder's Motivation

To help school children to acquire social values, strong feelings of concern for the environment and the motivation to act in protecting the environment and dal lake from pollution.

4. Awareness Through Campaigns and other Events

To help school children in acquiring an awareness and sensitivity about the environment and its allied problems through various events like seminars, conferences, debates, conferences etc.

5. Develop skills for future prospect

To help school children to acquire the skills for solving such problems and to evaluate environmental measures especially Dal lake.

6. Participation in social works

To help people and school children to develop a sense of responsibility and urgency regarding environmental problems and solutions.
Finally each country has to be engaged to solve the biggest environmental concern of Dal lake with education. Environmental education should not only be the part of the education system, but also participate in the political system, so that the work, policies and appropriate plans can be prepared at the national level.Taking the healthy hand of environmental education, therefore we must have relevance to the following
aspects:

1.Public Awareness from the Individual Level.

2.Identification of environmental problems and
solutions.

3.Conservation and preservation of natural resources and their judicious use.

4.Sustainable development for future generations.

5.Successful and effective planning of national economy for management of future environmental damage.
Therefore, environmental education should not be confined to a group or society, but every person should be aware about the environmental protection. It should be a continuous and lifelong process and be pragmatic towards environmental education so that it can be implemented properly and effectively.
