Residents of Bemina, Srinagar, are grappling with a sudden increase in the number of stray dogs in their locality, causing significant distress and concern.
Muskan Shafi Malik, a student of MA at AMU Aligarh and a resident of Bemina for the past year, said that this issue needs to be raised so as to highlight the impact of it on the community.
The locals complained that over the past ten days, the surge in stray dogs has disrupted the peace and tranquillity of the neighborhood. According to Muskan, the number of stray dogs has increased from a manageable 4-5 to over 20, creating a challenging environment for the residents.
The incessant barking of these dogs throughout the night has led to widespread insomnia, affecting the health and well-being of many, especially those with hypertension and diabetes.
Muskan’s personal rough survey revealed that the locality has more than 30 children under the age of 12. These children, who regularly attend school, Madrasa, and play in the public park, are now unable to move freely outside due to the fear of stray dogs.
The safety of these young residents has become a primary concern for their parents and guardians.
The issue of sleep deprivation is another major problem faced by the residents. Sleep, being a basic necessity, is crucial for maintaining good health. The constant barking of stray dogs during the night has created a nuisance, making it difficult for people to get a good night’s sleep. This has led to increased complaints of insomnia and related health issues among the residents.
Muskan pointed out that the sudden increase in the number of stray dogs is a human-made problem. However, the rapid multiplication of these dogs has taken the residents by surprise. As someone who studies late into the night and wakes up early for morning prayers, Muskan has personally experienced the adverse effects of this issue.
The residents of Bemina are urging the authorities to take immediate action to address the stray dog menace. They hope for a solution that ensures the safety and well-being of the community, allowing them to live peacefully and without fear.
