Everyone of us studied geography as an integral component of the subject called social studies or Environmental Studies in our School days. A little fraction of those who complete their schooling go for higher studies with geography as the main or one of the subjects. Those who opt geography for their undergraduate and later postgraduate studies are well aware that geography is a subject that enables us to understand the world and everything that is included in it as a whole. There are so many subfields of the subject that it’s very difficult for the scholar who has opted it to understand everything completely.

One of the subfields that I opted in my final year when I was pursuing masters degree in geography is Urban geography. I found it interesting because it would enable me to understand the genesis and evolution of cities in the world. Most of us know that a city is also the subject matter of sociology, anthropology, history, archaeology etc. but one thing that would differentiate studies about cities by a geographer from others is that the former always relies on mapping and cartography to evolve at a particular result other than just focusing on the theoretical components.
The scholars studying geography carry-on with the subject matter to a certain level-a level where the most of the subjects, fields and sub-fields of different subjects are intertwined and coordinated. At such a level a scholar of geography is bound to seek the help of scholars of other disciplines and fields of study including those of physical sciences, material sciences, arts, humanities and linguistics etc. That is the reason why a scholar of geography studies any feature or phenomenon very carefully and meticulously. The outcomes of such calculated studies by a scholar of geography make the studies itself interesting and beneficial for one and all.
The subfields of geography including economic geography, political geography, biogeography, population geography, medical geography, cultural geography and many others provide substantial support to the fact that a scholar of geography relies on many subjects and fields of study for reaching the valuable inference related to his studies. That is the logic behind a scholar of geography being well aware about many things from different fields of knowledge. That is also a reason why a scholar of geography turns into a successful professor, travelogue writer, surveyor, meteorologist, landscape, architect, Urban planner etc.
