The Other Pandemic

May 08, 2021 |

From the security point of view, the month of Ramzan was rather quiet. There were no attacks on security forces and no militant kills. It seemed as if the two sides had reached an understanding quite similar to the one that India and Pakistan reached earlier this year to uphold the 2003 ceasefire agreement. But, as is the situation with the border where the ceasefire vows seem to be falling apart, the peace in the plains also seems to be in danger of being eroded. Earlier this week, the border calm was shattered when the Pakistani rangers targeted a patrol of Border Security Forces along the International Border in Samba district of Jammu region. The attack didn’t lead to any casualties or injury of the BSF troopers and the fire was effectively retaliated. But it has cast an ominous shadow on the prospects of long lasting peace in Kashmir. On the other hand, the calm in the Valley was also shattered with the killing of five militants. While two militants, including a top commander who was involved in the heinous attack on BJP counselors in Sopore, were gunned down in north Kashmir, three militants affiliated with Al-Badr outfit were killed in Shopian. One militant was also convinced to lay down his arms and he surrendered in the nick of time before the security forces gunned down his colleagues. The shattering of the calm, both at the border and in the plains, comes at a time when the humanity is facing the worst crisis of Covid-19 pandemic. Our country has been hit hard by the second wave of Covid with thousands dying every day for the want of basic medical facilities such as medical oxygen and life-saving drugs, and daily infections are setting new records. The dearth of medical oxygen had prompted the government in Punjab to procure crucial supplies from across the border in Pakistan. But the central government put its foot down and advised the government of Captain Amrinder Singh against taking such a decision. The message that has gone out with the centre’s decision is that it is willing to let the people die rather than get cured with the assistance of the “enemy country”. If the BJP-led central government would not allow Punjab to procure crucial supply of medical oxygen from the neighboring country, we in Kashmir should not have high hopes.
