The Rising Innovative Supremacy of China

According to the ‘Global Innovation Index 2021’ of the World Organization for Intellectual Property, China’s overall innovation potential now ranks 12th

January 12, 2022 | Dr. Khalid Hussain

As a large country and the world’s second-largest economy, the year 2022 is significant for China in many ways, and nowadays there are so many developmental projects going on in China that were unimaginable a century ago. While China has become one of the strongest economies in the world, it has also become one of the fastest-growing powers in terms of science, technology, and innovation. Beijing the busiest commercial and tourism city of China that was devastated by the invading imperialists a century ago, is now going to make history by hosting the 2022 Olympic Games for the second time. In the present epidemic situation, hosting the Beijing Olympic Games will surely be an opportunity for the world to stand in unity, cooperation, strength, and solidarity.

According to the ‘Global Innovation Index 2021’ of the World Organization for Intellectual Property, China’s overall innovation potential now ranks 12th. It is noteworthy that this is the 9thconsecutive time that China has steadily improved its ranking in the Global Innovation Index since 2013 that is why in contemporary period China is also known as ‘the Global Leader of Innovation’ and the first manifestation of its new progressive concept is ‘Innovation’. Not only is China on the fast track of scientific and technological innovation, but it is also at the forefront of all modern fields of science and technology, and seems to be at the forefront of innovation in every domain of life. A glance at the statistics reveals that China continues to strengthen the core of ‘Modernisation and Innovation’ in its new journey towards socialist modernity, and has the support of policy-making.
In terms of scientific progress, in 2022 China will complete the construction of its space station. In the same way, the journey of the Chinese nation towards the great renaissance will be taken further, in which the Communist Party of China (CPC), led by 1.4 billion Chinese people, is committed to nation-building, overcoming all obstacles and challenges. It is noteworthy that the Communist Party of China celebrated its 100thanniversary in July last year and will hold its 20thNational Congress this year. Similarly, it is important to maintain a stable and sustainable economic environment, a safe and secure social environment, and a transparent and fair political environment. Last year marked the critical juncture, where on the occasion of the centenary of the CPC, the construction of a comprehensive moderate and prosperous society has been accomplished, and soon the goal of nation-building is also to complete the foundation. In this new journey, General Secretary of the CPC Central Committee and Chinese President Xi Jinping is undoubtedly the most important figure in shaping the course of history. In his New Year’s eve 2022 address, President Xi stated that “we must always have a long-term vision, keep in mind the potential risks, maintain strategic focus and commitment, and address sensitive issues. We must seek broader and greater goals while dealing with them”. He paid tribute to all the Chinese nationals who have worked hard and continued the extraordinary journey of the CPC, and expressed confidence and hope that all the citizens of the Chinese nation would be at the forefront of the struggle for a brighter future for the country and the nation. That is why China is promoting the development of the digital economy through the use of technology to make the best use of new opportunities. According to data released at the ‘China International Fair for Trade in Services’ in Beijing in September last year, trade in goods grew by 31% and services by 54.9%, while digital trade grew by 70.3%from 2010 to 2019, which shows that the next age is the age of innovation and technology.
China has emphasized the importance of innovation in its 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025), which includes artificial intelligence, quantum information, integrated circuits, life and health, breeding, aerospace, and other fields of science and technology. Implementing several strategic plans, Chinese President Xi Jinping has highlighted the important role of innovation in the overall development of the country and called for rapid efforts to make China a strong country in science and technology and achieve self-reliance in this domain. The world has witnessed that China has grown rapidly in 2021 in industries, crafts, tourism, education, culture, and civilization including artificial intelligence, digital economy, 5G, and advanced means of transportation are also booming. Similarly, China has improved the epidemic situation with the help of other technologies, including big data while ensuring epidemic prevention and control, while also advancing the important role of the digital economy so that post-covid-19 to further empower China’s progress.
China is pursuing a model of modernity that has never been seen before. It is on an innovative, integrated, green, and open progressive path for everyone. It is a model that keeps socialist China on a journey of development in which there is no room for development at the expense of environmental damage. According to some international organizations, China’s economy grew by 8% last year to 110 trillion yuan. Maintaining its economic growth in the current uncertainty is undoubtedly a major challenge. In this regard, China seeks to prevent the undue proliferation of capital across the country, to maintain market discipline, and to promote the rights of all types of enterprises, especially micro, small and medium enterprises, and major steps have been taken to protect the interests of workers and consumers. China’s ‘common prosperity’ initiative aims to end monopolies, increase innovation and competition, and provide fair opportunities. It is good that modernization in China is not limited to cities but extends to less developed regions, such as the southwestern province of Guizhou, since the region approved the construction of the country’s ‘First National Big Data Comprehensive Plot Zone’ in 2016, is at the forefront of China’s big data industry. Other technology companies, including Apple and Microsoft, have set up regional headquarters here, including Cloud-Computing and Big Data Centres. Taking advantage of its pleasant climate, transparent environment, favourable conditions, and excellent geography, Guizhou is now one of the regions with the largest number of mega data centers in China and even in the world.
On the other hand, the scope of innovation in China has been extended to all other sectors. It seeks to harmonize innovation with the environment by advancing environmentally-friendly industries. It has also taken the path of the Green Revolution through innovation and has placed itself on the path of ‘Green and Low Carbon Development’, including transformation in energy and other industries. As a result of these efforts, in 2021, China’s forest cover has exceeded 23% and is continuing to promote the building of ecological civilization, comprehensive green transformation, and the harmonious coexistence of synchronization between humanity and nature, and the shared society of life on the planet together. China is devoted to achieving socialist modernization by 2035, with strong key elements in the fields of culture, education, skills, sports, and health.
In the contemporary period,self-reliance in innovation and creativity is the guarantee of lasting success. But this does not mean that development will be pursued in isolation from the rest of the world, the process of learning from the major achievements and advances made in the field of science in other parts of the world will continue. Therefore, in the year 2022, the world will want to see how China promotes nature-friendly material development and in this regard, what policies are being adopted by China to achieve Green Development. Will‘Chinese Wisdom’ play a positive and constructive role in overcoming global problems? This would be a discourse of dialogue and debt in upcoming years.
