The Sacred Arrival of Ramadhan

"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 185)

March 03, 2025 | Dr. Aasif Ahmad

Today, on 2nd March 2025, corresponding to the 1st of Sha'ban 1446 AH, we stand at the threshold of the most sacred month in the Islamic calendar — Ramadhan. This is not just a month of fasting, but a divine opportunity for spiritual purification, forgiveness, and immeasurable blessings. As we prepare our hearts and minds, it is essential to reflect on the immense significance of this month, as highlighted in the Qur’an and Hadith.

The Command of Fasting in the Qur’an

Fasting during Ramadhan is a direct command from Allah (SWT), as revealed in the Holy Qur’an:
"O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 183)
This verse reminds us that fasting is not just an act of abstaining from food and drink, but a means to attain taqwa (piety and consciousness of Allah). It is a sacred practice that connects us to the generations of believers who came before us, emphasizing the universal need for spiritual discipline.

Ramadhan: The Month of the Qur’an

The Qur’an itself was revealed during this blessed month, adding to its sanctity:
"The month of Ramadhan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur'an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 185)
This month is not only about fasting but also about reconnecting with the Book of Allah, reciting, understanding, and implementing its teachings in our daily lives.
The Gates of Mercy Open Wide
The arrival of Ramadhan brings with it unparalleled mercy and forgiveness from Allah. The Prophet Muhammad (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"When the month of Ramadhan begins, the gates of Heaven are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are chained." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This Hadith illustrates the divine opportunity presented to us — a time when every act of worship is magnified, and the obstacles to spiritual growth are lifted.

Multiplied Rewards and Erasure of Sins

Ramadhan is a month of divine generosity. Even the smallest act of charity is multiplied manifold. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
"Whoever draws near to Allah during this month with a single characteristic of voluntary goodness shall be like one who performs an obligatory act in other times. And whoever performs an obligatory act during this month shall be like one who performs seventy obligations at any other time." (Ibn Khuzaymah)
Spending one rupee for Allah’s sake in this month brings the reward of seventy rupees. Similarly, offering one prayer earns the reward of seventy prayers. This immense multiplication of blessings is a manifestation of Allah’s infinite mercy towards His servants.

The Night of Decree

Within this blessed month lies Laylatul Qadr (The Night of Decree) — a night more rewarding than a thousand months:
"The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months." (Surah Al-Qadr: 3)
Spending this night in worship is equivalent to 83 years of devotion. It is a chance to have our past sins forgiven and to start anew, with our hearts cleansed and our souls rejuvenated.

Preparing for Ramadhan

As we step into the month of Sha'ban, it is a time for us to start mentally, physically, and spiritually preparing for Ramadhan. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) used to increase his acts of worship in Sha'ban, saying:
> "It is a month people neglect between Rajab and Ramadhan, but it is a month in which deeds are raised to the Lord of the worlds, and I like that my deeds be raised while I am fasting." (Sunan an-Nasa’i)
This Hadith teaches us the importance of using Sha'ban to build habits of worship — fasting voluntarily, reciting the Qur’an, giving charity, and increasing our du’as — so that we enter Ramadhan ready to maximize its blessings.

A Month of Transformation

Ramadhan is not just a month to experience hunger and thirst but a divine training ground for our souls. It teaches us patience, gratitude, empathy for the less fortunate, and the power of sincere repentance. It is a chance to transform ourselves, leaving behind sinful habits and adopting a lifestyle that pleases Allah. As we begin this spiritual journey, let us embrace this month with open hearts and unwavering determination. Let us pray for ourselves, our families, and the entire Ummah, asking Allah to grant us health, strength, and the ability to worship Him in the best possible manner.
May this Ramadhan be a means for our forgiveness, a source of countless rewards, and a step closer to Jannah.

"O Allah, allow us to reach Ramadhan and bless us in it."
