Islam is a complete code of conduct. Nothing has been left out. There are guidelines in black and white even on toilet etiquettes. When entering the toilet, one should say “Allahumma innee a'oodhu bika minal khubthi wal khabaa-ith." One should enter the toilet with one's left foot and exit with one's right foot. While exiting the toilet, recite Ghufraanak (I seek Your forgiveness). Do not face the Qibla. Do not turn your back towards it while urinating or defecating. Do not talk or sit for a long time or read anything like a newspaper in the toilet. Do not sing or use your cell phone. Refrain from smoking of chewing gum in the toilet. Men should wash their private parts from the back to the front. Women should wash them from the front to the back. It ensures total cleanliness and prevents sexual arousal by the stimulation of fingers. After washing, dry your private parts with a cloth. If cloth is not available, toilet paper can be used. This follows covering of the private parts immediately. After cleaning their private parts, men should do istibra. Women do not do it. Istibra means not to leave any drops of urine in the urethra. It is done by walking or coughing.Once when the Prophet (SAW) passed by a man’s grave he told Ibn ‘Abbas (ra) that the deceased man is being tortured, but not for a major sin: “He didn’t use to clean himself after urinating.” Bukari 211 Cleaning must be done by left hand. After using the toilet both hands need to be washed thoroughly. It is good to wear a headgear before entering the toilet.
The Holy Prophet (SAW) always sat down to relieve himself. This is proven by Aishah (RA), who was constantly in his presence. She said, “Don’t believe anyone who tells you the Prophet (SAW) used to stand while urinating. He always used to sit down.” Ibn Majah 303, A?mad 23894. This has been contested by Hudhayfah (RA). He said: “The Prophet (SAW) [while traveling] approached a garbage dump and stood while urinating.
