Traffic resumes on Srinagar-Jammu Highway

Traffic was resumed on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway after remaining suspended since last evening due to slippery road conditions following snow and rain at several places.

However, dozens of roads, connecting far-flung and remote areas with their respective district and tehsil headquarters, have been closed in the Kashmir Valley, due to heavy to very heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the national highway, linking the Ladakh region with Kashmir and historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir and Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region, have been closed for six winter months following heavy snowfall.

Traffic on the national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, was suspended last evening following slippery road condition at Qazigund and Jawahar tunnel after the mercury was below freezing point due to moderate and heavy snowfall on upper heights.

Vehicles were stopped as a precautionary measure to avoid any accident, official sources told UNI.

Despite snowing at Qazigund and other places, besides rain in Ramban area, both way traffic was allowed from Srinagar and Jammu this morning after all vehicles, stopped last evening on the highway, were allowed to move towards their respective destinations, they said.

However, as a precautionary measure to avoid any accident or traffic jam on the highway, the traffic police has announced some restrictions on movement of vehicles from both sides.
