Trump's first State visit to India on Feb 24-25

February 12, 2020 | New Delhi/UNI

At the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, US President Donald Trump will visit India on February 24-25 which is likely to advance the global strategic partnership between the two countries.
This will be the President's first visit to India.
Trump, accompanied by First Lady Melania, will be in New Delhi and Ahmedabad during which he would interact with a wide cross-section of Indian society.
The Ministry of External Affairs in a statement said the visit will provide an opportunity for the two leaders to "review progress in bilateral ties and further strengthen our strategic partnership."
The global strategic partnership between India and the US is based on trust, shared values, mutual respect and understanding, and marked by warmth and friendship between the peoples of the two countries.
"The relationship has further evolved under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi and President Trump, with significant progress in all areas including trade, defence, counter-terrorism, energy, coordination on regional and global issues as well as people-to-people ties."
Hours earlier in Washington, the US president's press secretary in a statement said, "During a phone call over the weekend, President Trump and Prime Minister Modi agreed the trip will further strengthen the United States-India strategic partnership and highlight the strong and enduring bonds between the American and Indian people."
During his two-day visit, the two sides are expected to ink a trade deal.
New Delhi also hopes the US President will revoke the cancelling of India's preferential trade status or the "Generalized System of Preference (GSP)" that provides tariff reduction on various products.
India had invited Trump for the January 26 Republic Day parade last year but it did not materialise due to "scheduling constraints" as the date of the President's State of the Union address clashed with the Republic Day celebrations.
Trump, who will seek re-election in US polls in November, had then said, "He wants me to go there. I will be going at some point to India."
