Two infants with renal calculi treated successfully at GMC

In a landmark medical achievement, the Department of Urology and the Department of Anesthesiology & Critical Care at the Super Speciality Hospital, Government Medical College Srinagar, have successfully treated two 7 & 8-month-old infants with renal calculi using Extra Corporeal Shock Wave Lithotripsy (ESWL). This groundbreaking procedure marks the first time such young patient’s have undergone ESWL for a 10mm/12mm renal stone’s at our institution.

The infant’s, diagnosed with a significant 10 mm and 12mm renal calculus, faced potential complications that could have severely impacted kidney function and overall health. Traditional surgical approaches posed considerable risks given the patient's age and size. However, the multidisciplinary team of experts at our hospital opted for the minimally invasive ESWL procedure, which uses high-energy shock waves to break the kidney stone into smaller, passable fragments.

Prof. (Dr) Syed Sajjad Nazir Head of the Department of Urology*, led the urology team in this delicate procedure. Prof. (Dr) Hina Bashir Head of the Department of Anesthesiology*, ensured the infant's safety and comfort throughout the procedure. "Administering anesthesia to such a young patient presents unique challenges, but our team's expertise and meticulous planning were key to the successful outcome," Dr. Nusrat Jehan, Dr. Mubashir and Dr. Baby Shahnaz Jeelani from Anesthesia Department explained. that "Our collaborative approach with the urology department was crucial in managing these case’s effectively."

Dr Tanveer Iqbal (Associate Professor Urology) said that the procedure’s were completed without complications, and the infant’s were discharge after one day.
