After 2020 and 2021, everyone was expecting that 2022 would bring in some relief to the onslaught of the virus which is now on a global rampage as it continues to take a toll on life in all its forms. The start of this year has turned out to be the worst in the form of unprecedented pace of Coronavirus which has peaked within a week in the rest of the country and Jammu and Kashmir as well. India reported 1,41,986 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday, a week after the country crossed the 10,000 mark, as the virus continues to spread with the Omicron variant now present in 27 states. The active cases comprise 1.34 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 97.30 per cent. An increase of 1,00,806 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The daily positivity rate was recorded at 9.28 per cent while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 5.66 per cent while the cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive has exceeded 150.06 crore. There was a single day jump of 64 Omicron cases with overall cases of 3,007 of the new variant of coronavirus. Maharashtra is one of the worst-hit states, adding 40,925 cases in 24 hours - a 13 per cent spike over yesterday with the government on verge of announcing lockdown in Mumbai which saw cases  alone. Jammu and Kashmir Saturday reported three deaths and 655 fresh positive cases of COVID-19, thus taking the number of total active cases in the Union Territory to 2,982. The positivity rate in J&K has increased from 0.35 percent to 1.11 percent in just the last five days. With three more deaths, the death toll in J&K has reached 4,537 and 655 fresh positive cases reported on Saturday have pushed the tally of positive cases to 343,965. Of the exact number of 343,965 cases, 216,238 are from Kashmir division and 127,727 from Jammu division. Among 655 new cases, 263 belong to Kashmir division while as 392 are from Jammu division, adding that the total number of positive cases in Kashmir division have reached to 216,238 including 212,572 recoveries and 2,334 deaths while as total number of positive cases in Jammu division have reached to 127,727 including 123,874 recoveries and 2,203 deaths. Srinagar accounts for 133. One new case of Mucormycosis was reported today, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 51 across J&K. Even though the scare remains, people overall are not taking the situation seriously as evident from the people's attitude on streets of Srinagar which reflects the overall scenario in the rest of Kashmir. On its part, the UT administration is leaving no stone unturned in addressing the pandemic at multisectoral levels which deserves kudos.
