Water scarcity sparks protest in Batamaloo

Residents of SD Colony at Batamaloo area here in Srinagar city blocked main road leaving hundreds of small and big vehicles stranded for nearly an hour to protest acute water shortage in the area.
The protesters also stopped PHE vehicles that were supposed to supply water in other areas and raised slogans against Public Health Engineering (PHE) Department.
Eyewitnesses said that protesters mainly women, holding sticks in their hands sat on a dharna chanting slogans against PHE Department. They said the area for the past more than 15 days is without water while as the authorities despite repeated pleas to restore water supply have failed to take any tangible step in this regard.
The protesters’ said the PHE department has taken them for a ride thus leaving no option for them to block the road.
A police party rushed to spot and somehow pacified the protesters with the assurance that matter will be taken up with the concerned department.
