The historic Jamia Masjid in downtown Srinagar remained out of bounds for worshippers for twelfth consecutive week, even as restrictions were imposed in parts of Kashmir on Friday.
Normal life was hit in Kashmir Valley on Friday as people observed spontaneous shutdown for the running 82nd day against the annulment of special status of Jammu and Kashmir that deprived people of their own flag, state subject rights and other things. The special status was annulled by Government of India through a Presidential decree on 5 August this year and since then Kashmir Valley is in stagnation mode. The decision sparked resentment even in Jammu and Kargil while in Leh people are demanding domicile status.
Shops, business establishments, private schools and colleges remained shut while majority of the fuel stations also remained out of service. Public transport was not seen on the roads.
Private transport was seen on the roads in Srinagar city while no Friday congregational prayers were allowed for the 12th consecutive Friday at historical Jamia Masjid in old city. Huge deployment of Forces was seen on the roads to ensure peace and order.
Internet shutdown persisted for the consecutive 82nd day. Due to this blockade, people continue to face hardships. Pre-paid mobile service also remained non-functional. There has been no rail service from past 82 days.
Official sources said that a jeweler’s shop was set on fire by unknown persons in Saraf Kadal area of old Srinagar city. This is the second such incident in old city. Earlier, a jeweler’s shop was set on fire at Rajouri Kadal area. Sources added that fire destroy ‘Alpine Jewellers’ on late Thursday night.
Two shops in Batamaloo area also were gutted in mysterious fire. The shutdown was also observed in other districts of Central, North and South Kashmir.
Reports of shutdown also poured in from other parts of Kashmir including Budgam, Gandrebal, Kangan, Pakharpora, Beerwah, Magam, Khag, Pulwama, Tahab, Pampore, Tral, Awantipors, Shopian, Anantnag, Bijbehara, Ashmuqam, Pahalgam, Kokarnag, Kulgam, DH Pora, Dooru, Baramulla, Sopore, Pattan, Tangmarg, Bandipora, Kupwara, Handwara, Kralgund, Lolab and other parts.
