Who's at Fault?

July 31, 2020 | Faizaan Bashir

See someone mentioning Oxford University, and a great many intellects come to our mind, making us question about the failures in producing one here in this part of the world. It's a question worth meditating; however, it seems we have never given it a serious thought- where have we failed?
All problems spring from the blunder done in the first place, that's exactly what happens the day a teacher directs his/her students to learn by means of root learning. No learning of how things work needed. All a child is supposed to do is to read aloud, jot down a few dozen words, close the copy; and the next day he/she should be able to memories everything 'on tip of the tongue'. Bombarded by demands, on part of teachers, of memorizing topics for years on end, unfortunate students fail to discern the essence of education. Ask a student a few questions like where are they moving toward, why are they studying certain subjects, why are they becoming a certain person, you will witness them coming up with a plethora of faulty replies. Who is responsible for their faulty years to come?
The situation has even aggravated to such an extent that one often witnesses students complain that education holds little or nothing for future, and end up wandering in pursuit of some jobs. Who failed in making them realize the educated, having deeply understood everything, has the capability to achieve anything? Who failed?
It's evident in these trying times when one, fifty times a day, stumbles upon a student-like wandering faces uncovered. Who deem the virus, which has shaken every nuke and corner of the world, no longer fatal. Who made them such mindless beings?
It's high time we meditate on the ways forward. Let's start making students not only well-informative by teaching them how a certain thing works, and putting this rote leaning to an end, but by making them realize the perks education hold within. Of making one a better human being. Of making one a thinker, an intellect.
