Winter in Autumn

October 18, 2021 |

For the last two years Kashmir has witnessed sudden dip in temperature in the first week of October with snowfall in upper areas indicating the advance in winter season which is unprecedented in the Valley as summer is shrinking and winter is expanding. It's a sorry state of affairs that there are several universities having environmental science as a subject but no research paper or study has been conducted on this weather pattern. Even the Meteorological Department which is backed by funding from the Union Government has not taken cognizance of this issue causing severe concern among natives who have been forced to pull out woolen clothes from their closets during autumn. The worrisome factor is the shrinking of summer which is taking a toll on soil conditions and would have serious repercussions on food safety of the Valley and impact overall horticulture and agriculture sectors. One could never imagine witnessing snow in the first week of October and wearing winter wear which otherwise would have been used in November end or February end. People sensing severe harsh conditions have started preparing for winter ahead of the period they were supposed to push local coal sellers to sell bags full of cost and hoard the stock in advance. The administration should take review of the situation arising out of the weather conditions in October as mountainous regions of Ladakh, Drass, Gurez, Karnah, Keran and Kupwara have already felt the arrival of winter in villages there. These areas have witnessed snowfall in full in advance and are now reeling in severe chilly conditions and make life difficult for them to sustain since they had to prepare early for the upcoming season. Early winter means stress on livelihood in Kashmir where lockdowns have already had an impact on every sphere of life over three years now. The UT administration should provide timely succor in form of ration relief to citizens living below poverty line in upper reaches and ensure safety of nomads who are pulling down their stocks from pastures in mountain highlands. Similarly, the education department should ensure proper heating arrangement in view of crucial high school and higher secondary examinations in November-December as it has announced an offline system for upper classes. It should now allow repeat of early experiences wherein heating arrangements in examination halls were nil thus impacting the performance of the students who were already charged for the heating expenses incurred by the department in conduct of the examinations.
