Women Peace Builders

Women in Jammu and Kashmir have been a vital part of the socio-political history. Their role in political process and the indigenous movement can’t be ruled out. However ironically, their opinion and narrative haven’t been given due space. The political history of the JK have been shaped by the womenfolk, however their narrative always remain dismal. Srinagar based policy group, Ehsaas launched a well meaning campaign of establishing Samanbals (meeting points for woman) across the State. Ehsaas realised the importance of creating vital spaces for the womenfolk , in absence of the vibrant social spaces in the JK , especially in trouble torn, Kashmir region. Women have to be incorporated as equal stakeholders in the entire spectrum of the conflict cycle, to include conflict prevention, crisis management and conflict resolution. How women can use art as a therapy. Women should be able to overcome their inner conflict first. Role of women in creating safe social spaces is vital for the peaceful social order. The women are the worst sufferers of depression and trauma, art could be used as a remedy to overcome such grave ailments.Most of the times tend to be suppressed which results in various underlying conflicts. They struggle to express their grievances and sometimes get trapped into the traumatic experiences, if not provided proper guidance and counselling. Peace should be given the space to be the real peace builders of Kashmir. In this regard the idea of Samanbal and the ideas like it have created a positive wave across the troubled region where people, especially womenfolk have been subjected to lot of psychological trauma. It is also important that the women should be provided equal space, equal opportunities and the fate of the underdeveloped. This equal-stakeholder philosophy must define an institutionalized role for women in formulating strategies and initiatives during the planning, implementing and evaluation stages of conflict intervention. Peace negotiations continue to remain largely exclusive and need to address gender inclusivity in earnest. The peace agreements concluded should specifically provision women rights on security issues, with particular reference to early warning, crisis management and conflict related sexual violence.
