An official recently reported substantial progress on the Srinagar Smart City project, noting that 90 of 168 planned initiatives have been completed. The remaining 78 projects, valued at over INR 490 crores, are advancing rapidly in Srinagar's central areas. These efforts aim to improve more than 25km of public spaces and streets, focusing on better lighting and facade enhancements.
During a key update, the official from Srinagar Smart City Limited (SSCL) highlighted the inauguration of the Habba Kadal bridge, a cornerstone project in the central city area, signaling significant progress in the urban transformation. "We are on schedule with all ongoing projects, which are expected to finish by June 2024," the official confirmed, indicating steady advancement in smart city initiatives.
The upgrades target major enhancements in infrastructure within the city center, aimed at boosting the daily life of its inhabitants by upgrading critical systems like drainage, sewage, communications, and electrical, as well as improving road conditions. "There is considerable activity underway to upgrade the infrastructure in the downtown area," the official noted.
Local residents and business owners may experience some temporary inconveniences due to the necessary digging for underground works. The official assured that these disruptions are part of a larger effort to overhaul the city’s infrastructure, including new roads, better drainage systems, enhanced lighting, and improved parking facilities.
Among the key ongoing projects are the Dal Gate Gojwara road initiative with a budget of INR 25 crores and extensive street renovations in Bohri Kadal, Maharaj Bazaar, and Ali Kadal, which together cost INR 50 crores. These initiatives include major road and sidewalk improvements. "With underground utilities and drainage works complete, surface finishing is being accelerated in two shifts to meet deadlines," added the official.
SSCL is taking careful measures to lessen the impact on residents during these enhancements. The community is encouraged to support the developments, reassured by strict adherence to the project timelines, aiming for completion by the end of June this year.
These projects are integral to the broader goal of transforming Srinagar into a contemporary, smart city that not only elevates urban living standards but also preserves its cultural heritage. The community eagerly awaits the completion of these projects, anticipating they will significantly enhance the region's quality of life and infrastructure.
