August 01, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar , Aug 1: Police in central Kashmir’s Srinagar district on Saturday said they had solved a blind murder case within six hours of recovering an unidentified body, arresting a mother and son accused of murdering a man over a financial dispute and dumping his body in the Babademb Canal.

Police said the victim has been identified as Nazir Ahmad Bhat, son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat, a resident of Kalantpora, Hawal. The accused have been identified as Haleema Bano and her son, Moomin Ahmad, originally from Machil in Kupwara district and presently living as tenants in Mughal Mohalla, Rainawari.

According to police, Police Station Khanyar received information on July 30 about an unidentified body wrapped in gunny bags lying in the Babademb Canal beneath Baba Dawood Khakhi Bridge. A case was registered under FIR No. 49/2026 under Sections 103 and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), following which an investigation was launched.

Given the gravity of the case, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted under the supervision of senior officers. Police said sustained investigation, technical analysis and corroboration of evidence led to the identification of the accused.

Investigators said the accused allegedly murdered Nazir Ahmad Bhat inside their rented accommodation following a financial dispute. In an attempt to conceal the crime, they allegedly wrapped the body in gunny bags and dumped it into the Babademb Canal.

Police said the accused fled Srinagar after the incident but were traced and arrested from the Lolab area of Kupwara district within six hours of the recovery of the body.

Several incriminating articles believed to be linked to the offence have also been seized during the investigation, police said.

Further investigation is underway to determine whether any other person was involved in the crime and to complete the legal formalities, police added.
