
MeT predicts further drop in minimum temperature
Srinagar, Dec 13: Kashmir continued to remain under intense cold with the night temperature across the Valley staying below freezing point on Friday.
A MeT official said the ski resort of Gulmarg was the coldest resort in the valley with the mercury plunging to minus 9.6 degrees Celsius.
“Pahalgam experienced its coldest night of the season at minus 9.4 degrees Celsius,” he said.
Qazigund registered a low of minus 1.4 degrees Celsius while Kupwara recorded a minimum of minus 2.5 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag in south Kashmir logged minus 1.8 degrees Celsius.
The cold intensified after higher reaches, including popular tourist resorts of Gulmarg and Sonamarg, Tangmarg, Gurez, and Zojila axis received light to moderate snowfall on Thursday.
Some areas in the plains in Shopian, Pulwama, and Baramulla, as well as the upper areas of Anantnag, Budgam, and Bandipora also received light snowfall.
The Met department has forecast mainly dry weather till December 21.
“The minimum temperature is expected to fall further in the valley and there will be a cold wave over many stations during the next four days,” a MeT official said.
In view of fresh snowfall, the sub-freezing temperature and icy conditions over roads of important passes and higher reaches, the MeT has advised tourists, travelers, and transporters to follow advisory from administration and traffic department in order to avoid inconvenience.
