Empowering Women in Nagaland

May 22, 2025 | FAROOQ WANI

A significant step toward women empowerment and community development has been taken by the 45 Assam Rifles in Chieswama, where a Vocational and Skill Training Centre has been established. This initiative is showcasing the commitment of the armed forces not only to national security but also to social upliftment.

Key Highlights

The centre provides vocational training and skill development programs, primarily focused on empowering local women by equipping them with practical skills for self-reliance.
Training is provided in areas such as handloom weaving, tailoring, embroidery, handicrafts, and other income-generating skills relevant to the local economy.
The program aims to enhance the economic independence of women, especially in rural and tribal areas where opportunities are limited.
By bridging the gap between traditional knowledge and modern market needs, the centre also promotes cultural preservation through livelihood.
This initiative reflects the broader vision of the Indian Armed Forces to serve the nation beyond the battlefield—by building trust, promoting welfare, and strengthening communities in remote and underserved areas.
The residents of Ganesh Nagar in Dimapur, particularly women, have raised important concerns and demands related to economic empowerment, basic amenities, and cultural challenges. These needs reflect both immediate hardships and long-term development opportunities in the area.

Key Issues and Demands

Demand for Skill Training

Women in the community are eager to receive skill development training in various fields such as tailoring, weaving, embroidery, food processing, and small-scale entrepreneurship. This training is essential to empower them economically and socially.

Lack of Tap Water Supply

There is a shortage of accessible tap water in the area, making daily life challenging. Women have specifically demanded reliable water supply systems to reduce the burden of fetching water and to improve hygiene and living standards.

Cultural Restrictions on Selling Handmade Clothes

Women in the community traditionally make homemade clothing, but cultural norms restrict them from selling these items in the open market. This significantly hampers their ability to earn a livelihood and gain financial independence.

Need for Spinning Machines and Handloom Equipment

To overcome economic hardship and promote self-sufficiency, women have expressed a strong need for spinning machines and handloom units. These tools will enable them to produce textiles efficiently and potentially create micro-enterprises within the community.

Recommendations

Implement government-sponsored skill development programs tailored to local demand.
Ensure tap water connections through local municipal initiatives or rural development schemes.
Support cultural dialogue that encourages economic participation while respecting tradition.
Provide handloom and spinning machines through government grants, women’s cooperatives, or CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) projects.

Conclusion

Empowering the women of Ganesh Nagar through skill development, infrastructure improvement, and economic support will not only alleviate poverty but also uplift the entire community. Their voices must be heard, and their aspirations supported through concrete action.
