A security official said terrorists lobbed a grenade towards the deployment of police and CRPF at Sunday market near the TRC in Srinagar.
The grenade missed the intended target and exploded on the road, injuring 12 civilians.
The blast triggered panic as shoppers ran for cover.
The injured were shifted to Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital (SMHS) for treatment.
The doctor have termed the condition of one of the injured as critical while rest are stable.
After the grenade attack, Police and CRPF men rushed to the area to take stock of the situation.
The top security officials also visited the attack site.

The attack took place a day after a day long encounter in Khanyar area of Srinagar in which a top Lashkar-e-Toiba commander Usman Lashkari alias Chota Waleed was killed.
