Two people injured in a road accident near the Nowyug Tunnel on the Jammu-Srinagar highway last evening succumbed to their injuries, officials said on Wednesday.
“Around 8:40 pm Tuesday, a Hector vehicle traveling from Jammu to Srinagar lost control near the Nowyug Tunnel due to overspeeding and collided with a divider and a police barrier,” they said.
The crash left five people including a Special Police Officer (SPO) injured.
All Injured were shifted to Emergency Hospital Qazigund for treatment, where from they were shifted to Government Medical College Anantnag for further treatment.
“One injured person Zubair Ahmad Wani of Heerpora Shopian was declared dead on his arrival. A second person identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Dalal, a resident of Shopian succumbed to his injuries during the night,” officials said.
Two other travelers, Irshad Ahmad Mir and Umar Bashir Najar, sustained grievous injuries, while an on-duty SPO was also hit by the car, leaving him critically wounded.
Police registered a case under section 281,125(a), 324(4) BNS in Police Station Qazigund Kulgam and took up the investigation.
Six days ago, an accident took place inside the Navyug Tunnel in which 17 people, including the driver, were injured after an SRTC bus overturned.
Wails and cries filled the air as bodies of two Shopian residents, who lost their lives in a tragic accident, reached their home on Wednesday.
As soon as news of the accident spread, neighbors and relatives of the deceased rushed to the victims’ homes.
A narrow street leading to Dalal’s house remained filled with mourners throughout the day, with women wailing in grief.
“He was the only breadwinner of his family and was known for his compassionate nature,” said Javed Ahmad, a local resident.
Dalal, who ran a fabric store in the main town, is survived by his wife, son, and daughter. A few years ago, his elder brother also passed away due to cardiac arrest a day before Eid.
Grief also engulfed the neighboring Hirpora village when Wani’s body was brought home.
Wani had married barely six months ago and worked as a mechanic at a Tata Garage. He had traveled to Ramban on company orders to fix a vehicle.
“He was heading back after repairing the vehicle when the accident occurred,” said one of Wani’s relatives, letting out a sorrowful sigh.
Wani leaves behind his pregnant wife and parents.
