The J&K Police on Friday claimed to have gunned down two foreign terrorists affiliated with Lashkar-e-Toiba in an encounter in Brar area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district who were involved in the killing of Rahul Bhat, a Kashmiri Pandit in Chadoora a day earlier.
"BandiporaEncounterUpdate: 01 more #terrorist killed (total 2). #Search operation in progress. Further details shall follow, " a police spokesman said in a tweet.
According to Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar, the slain duo had recently infiltrated and had escaped during an encounter on Wednesday in Salinder forest area of the north Kashmir district. One of their associates, a local from Baramulla, was gunned down during the first gunfight.
The second encounter broke out after security forces cordoned the area following a tip off which led to an intense exchange of fire in which the two terrorists were gunned down.
Earlier this week, the Army said at least 168 terrorists are operating in Jammu and Kashmir while 75 have been killed in encounters with government forces this year. Among those killed include 21 foreigners, they pointed out.
In the past 11 months, 11 terrorists were encountered and 12 infiltration bids were foiled in the vicinity of the Line of Control (LoC) alone, they said. The two terrorists who were gunned down in Bandipora are believed to be a part of a group which had infiltrated into Kashmir recently.
In 2021, government forces killed 180 terrorists, out of which 18 were foreign elements. This was possible due to synchronised intelligence network and support from civil population, he said.
