Champhai, June 18: Acting on specific intelligence inputs, Assam Rifles under Spear Corps, in close coordination with Mizoram Police, intercepted two individuals carrying contraband between Tlangsam and Zotlang in Champhai district of Mizoram, leading to a major narcotics recovery.
Officials said the joint team launched a targeted interception operation after receiving credible information about the movement of suspected drug traffickers in the area. The suspects were stopped during routine checking, following which a detailed search was carried out.
During the operation, security personnel recovered 950 grams of methamphetamine tablets from their possession. The seized contraband is estimated to be worth approximately ₹2.93 crore in the illegal drug market.
The two individuals were taken into custody on the spot, and preliminary questioning is underway to determine the source, supply chain, and intended destination of the narcotics. Officials believe the consignment may be linked to cross-border drug trafficking networks operating in the region.
Security agencies have intensified surveillance in the Champhai sector, which has emerged as a vulnerable route for narcotics smuggling due to its proximity to the international border. Additional investigations are being conducted to identify wider links and possible collaborators.
Authorities reiterated that joint operations between Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police are part of an ongoing effort to curb drug trafficking and dismantle illegal networks operating in the Northeast region.
Further legal proceedings in the case are underway under relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
