Massive landslide hits Khuni Nallah
At least 11 people were killed in two separate tragedies caused by landslides due to cloudburst in the twin districts of Ramban and Reasi in Jammu region on Saturday.
Seven members of a family including five children and their parents, were killed after a massive landslide triggered by heavy rainfall hit Baddar village in the remote Mahore subdivision of Reasi district at midnight.
Officials said the tragedy occurred in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when a landslide triggered by cloudburst buried the house of Nazir Ahmed in Baddar under its debris.
In the incident, Nazir alongwith six members of his family were buried alive and killed in the landslide.
The deceased were identified as Nazir Ahmed, son of Bhar Din, his wife Wazira Bano, and their five sons—Bilal Ahmed, Mohammad Mustafa, Mohammad Adil, Mohammad Mubarakh, and Waseem Ahmed.
In another incident, four people lost their lives and one person is missing after a cloudburst struck Rajgarh tehsil of Ramban district.
Officials said the cloudburst triggered a flash flood, killing four people, damaging property, and disrupting normal life in the region.
They said one person is still missing and a rescue and relief operation is going on to retrieve the body of the missing person.
A massive landslide triggered by heavy rains hit the Khuni Nallah area of Ramban district today, blocking the flow of the Bichalri river.
The debris has dammed up the river, and with water accumulating, the villages downstream, especially the Karalana hamlet of 20 homes, are now under the threat of flooding, officials said.
A video of the landslide has gone viral on social media.
Officials said the administration was monitoring the situation.
Over the last two weeks, intense rains, cloudbursts, and landslides have wreaked havoc in the Jammu region, claiming over 115 lives, most of them pilgrims.
While 65 pilgrims were killed when a cloudburst hit Chishoti village of Padder in Kishtwar during the annual Machail Mata Yatra, 34 pilgrims lost their lives when a landslide struck near the Mata Vaishnodevi shrine in Jammu.
