Girl students fared better than their male counterparts in the 10th class board examinations, the results of which were declared by the Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) on Saturday.
A total of 74,090 students— 37,045 boys and 37045 girls —had appeared in the examination held amid Covid-19 pandemic last year, officials said. Of them, 78.43 percent had cleared the examinations, including 78.74 percent girls and 78.14 percent boys respectively.
Government schools fared better this time with 67.25 percent students out of a total 38,721 clearing the examination. Last year, 62.76 percent of government school students had passed the examination. Private school students also did better with 30,967 (91.18 percent) students out of 33,963 being successful in the examination.
Nineteen students secured 500 out of 500 marks, while 24 secured 499 marks out of 500.
“We only give grades. Don't publish positions in 10th class,” officials said.
Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, extended greetings to the successful students.
“Congratulations to all my young friends who have successfully cleared @jkboseofficial class 10th examinations, Annual, Regular-2021, Kashmir Division,” Sinha said in a tweet.
“Compliments to teachers, parents & @jkboseofficial. Best wishes to all the students for their bright future,” he said further.
However, soon after the results started coming in, the JKBOSE website crashed due to heavy visitor traffic, leaving many students distressed.
Angry parents and students complained vociferously. An angry parent, Gulzar Ahmad, said: “We have been put to great trouble and this speaks of insensitivity on the part of authorities.”
Azrah, a student, said: “We called a number of people and luckily one of them had the gazette.”
“There should be action taken against those responsible,” said Ghulam Mohammad, another parent.
Despite repeated attempts, no senior JKBOSE official could be contacted as their phones were switched off.
