A Clerk’s Words, a Professor’s Rise

The turning point came through a conversation with a head clerk, Abdul Rehman Itoo. The clerk, once selected for BVSc, missed his opportunity due to a delayed letter—ironically, by the postman himself. He shared with young Huzaifa that despite having potential, he compromised and settled early

Inspiration is not always drawn from towering positions or influential names. Sometimes, the spark comes from the most unexpected places—like a humble conversation with a clerk or a quiet memory of a classroom moment. The story of Dr. Huzaifa Pandith, Assistant Professor of English, stands as a testament to the fact that true inspiration lies not in titles, but in the courage to chase one’s passion.
Hailing from the heart of Srinagar, Dr. Huzaifa Pandith’s journey reflects a deep longing not just for success, but for meaning. It began like many others—born into a modest household, he was admitted to Burn Hall School, one of Srinagar’s renowned educational institutions. There, he discovered his love for stories, for talking to teachers, and slowly, for words and poetry. Literature quietly crept into his soul, becoming more than a subject—it became a calling.
Tragedy, however, struck early. At the tender age of 16, he lost his father, a government employee. As per rules, he was offered a compensatory job in the same department—Irrigation and Flood Control (I&FC)—as a Junior Assistant. Most would have settled there, grateful for security. But Dr. Huzaifa Pandith’s spirit wasn't made to settle. Something in him yearned for more.
The turning point came through a conversation with a head clerk, Abdul Rehman Itoo. The clerk, once selected for BVSc, missed his opportunity due to a delayed letter—ironically, by the postman himself. He shared with young Huzaifa that despite having potential, he compromised and settled early. “I shouldn’t have let life pass by with regret,” he told Huzaifa, who carried those words like a compass. They pierced deep into the teenager’s heart, making him question: What if he too allowed his dreams to drift away?
By then, Huzaifa had completed his B.A. but felt dissatisfied, especially with studying literature via distance learning. His heart wasn’t in it. That inner fire, kindled by poetry and passion, demanded more. Though he began a PG through IGNOU, a well-wisher urged him to go for a regular postgraduate degree. He took the risk—borrowed money for airfare—and appeared in the entrance test at the University of Pune. To his relief, he was selected.
Pune became a turning point. It was there that literature truly became his home. The vibrant academic environment helped him nurture his interests in translation and poetry, slowly converting his hobbies into purpose.
Returning to the Valley after PG, he took a teaching job at Delhi Public School (DPS) Srinagar, handling higher classes. Yet, his sights were now set on the position he once admired as a student—the Assistant Professor. He fondly recalls a memory when he and his friends stood in line for document attestation during college. “Who’s that man sitting cross-legged and signing documents?” he had asked. The reply came: “He’s a professor.” That simple moment, that word—professor—echoed in his mind. It wasn’t just a title anymore; it was a dream.
But dreams, as always, demand sacrifice. To qualify, he had to clear a Ph.D. entrance and commit to research. In 2015, he appeared for the Ph.D. test at the University of Kashmir. His name appeared at the bottom of the selection list—just enough to keep hope alive. With determination, he pursued and completed his doctorate in English Literature.
Finally, in 2021, his dream was realized—Dr. Huzaifa Pandith was appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Higher Education, Jammu & Kashmir. Today, he serves at Government Degree College, Pampore, inspiring countless students not just through his subject, but through the story of his life.
Today, Professor Huzaifa Pandith is not only an accomplished teacher but also a phenomenal author. His deep love for literature and language has led him to publish numerous original works, especially poetry, which has been widely appreciated for its depth and lyrical elegance. Beyond creative writing, he has also contributed significantly to academia, with many national and international research papers to his name. His work reflects a rare blend of scholarly insight and poetic expression, making him a respected figure both in the classroom and in the world of literary research.
As a colleague, I can confidently say that Dr. Huzaifa Pandith’s teaching style is uniquely engaging. His command over syntax, his clarity of thought, and his ability to connect with students set him apart. The journey from a government desk to a lecture podium wasn’t easy, but it was driven by relentless passion. And perhaps, his own words sum it up best. When asked about his dreams during his college days, he replied with a smile:
“I had two dreams: One, to have my own official stamp; and two, to sit cross-legged on a sofa beside a coal bukhari. It may sound silly, but I swear—it was a dream."
Inspiration doesn’t always wear suits or hold designations. Sometimes it walks into your life quietly—in the form of a sentence, a regret, a smile, or a missed chance. Dr. Huzaifa Pandith’s story shows that with the right spark and a strong will to follow your heart, dreams—no matter how small or big—can come true. His life is now a source of motivation for hundreds of students, and his journey reminds us all: When inspiration strikes, follow it—even if it leads you down an uncertain road.
