A Landmark Train

August 10, 2025 |

The arrival of the first loaded freight train at Anantnag Railway Station on Saturday is more than just a ceremonial milestone—it is a historic moment in Jammu and Kashmir’s long-awaited rail connectivity journey. With the operationalisation of the Banihal-Sangaldan-Reasi-Katra segment under the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, the Valley is witnessing a transformation in the transport infrastructure that promises to change our economic and social landscape. The USBRL has been one of the country’s most ambitious engineering undertakings, crossing formidable Himalayan terrain, battling extreme weather, and requiring some of the world’s most complex tunnelling and bridge-building feats. For decades, our dependence on road transport via the treacherous Jammu-Srinagar National Highway meant that the movement of goods was not just slow and expensive but also vulnerable to landslides, snow-blockades, and seasonal disruptions. The freight train’s arrival marks a decisive step towards ending that isolation. The implications for the local economy will be profound. Farmers and horticulturists—particularly apple growers—will now have a faster, cheaper, and more reliable means to send their produce to markets across India. Industries, handicraft traders, and small businesses stand to benefit from reduced transport costs and improved access to raw materials. The tourism sector, too, will feel the ripple effect, as the improved logistics network supports the hospitality industry with better supply chains. Equally important is the strategic dimension. Enhanced connectivity means greater integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country, not just economically but also socially. Reliable freight movement will encourage investment, industrial setups, and infrastructure projects that were previously hindered by logistical bottlenecks. It will also provide a critical supply lifeline in times of emergencies or natural disasters, when road transport might falter. However, this achievement should not obscure the challenges that remain. While freight trains are now operational, the full benefits will only be realised when regular passenger services commence on the new segment, knitting together all districts along the route. The UT government and Indian Railways must ensure that the infrastructure is maintained at world-class standards, that stations are developed with modern facilities, and that the local population is trained to harness the opportunities this connectivity offers. The symbolism of a freight train rolling into Anantnag is powerful—it signifies movement, connection, and progress. For Kashmir which has often been defined by geographical isolation and political turbulence, the steel tracks of the USBRL are more than just infrastructure; they are a promise of stability and growth. The challenge now lies in ensuring that this promise translates into tangible, long-term benefits for every resident of Jammu and Kashmir. If the project continues on track, quite literally, this could be the dawn of a new economic chapter for the Valley.
