A Time for Reflection

November 20, 2024 |

International Men’s Day is celebrated on November 19 each year and it serves as a day to acknowledge the contributions, challenges, and well-being of men across the globe. While much of the discourse surrounding gender focuses on empowering women—a necessary and overdue endeavor—there is also room for a conversation about the unique struggles men face. In Kashmir, which has been marked by aociopolitical unrest, International Men’s Day takes on a poignant significance. Kashmiri society, like many others, is deeply rooted in patriarchal traditions, often casting men in the dual roles of protector and provider. This expectation comes with immense pressures, especially in a region where the trauma of violence has disrupted every aspect of life. The psychological toll on Kashmiri men—be they fathers, brothers, or sons—remains an underexplored issue. Many have lost their livelihoods, witnessed violence, or been subjected to harshness, often leaving them with untreated mental health issues. Unfortunately, societal norms discourage men from openly addressing emotional struggles, perpetuating a culture of silence and stoicism. The turbulence of the past has also created a generation of disillusioned youth. Unemployment rates in Jammu and Kashmir are among the highest in India, with young men bearing the brunt of this crisis. The lack of economic opportunities often forces them into precarious situations, fueling resentment and hopelessness. Meanwhile, the absence of constructive outlets for their energy and aspirations leaves many vulnerable to radicalization, further exacerbating Kashmir’s challenges. Education, too, has taken a hit. While strides have been made to improve literacy rates, young men in conflict-prone areas often drop out of school to support their families or because the environment feels unsafe. The gap in access to education and employment opportunities has left an indelible mark on Kashmiri men, curbing their potential to thrive. However, the narrative need not remain one of struggle. International Men’s Day is an opportunity to shift the focus towards holistic solutions. Programs that encourage open dialogue about mental health, promote vocational training, and create safe spaces for men to share their experiences can go a long way in addressing the region’s unique challenges. Community-driven initiatives that redefine masculinity beyond traditional roles can also help alleviate the societal burden placed on men. Kashmir, like the rest of the world, stands to gain from empowering men to lead balanced, fulfilled lives. International Men’s Day reminds us that addressing the needs of one gender never comes at the expense of another. It is, instead, a step toward building a society where all individuals—regardless of gender—can prosper and contribute meaningfully.
