
The discovery of agriculture was the first step towards a civilized life. All great civilization flourished in the river valleys, for eg. Indus valley civilization. Agriculture gave a settled life to Homo sapiens who were initially wanders, hunters and lack of training, skip formation, conservation of natural resources on which agriculture depends crucially, dearth of consultancy and extension services and safety net.
Agriculture is today on cross roads. The human civilization in the era of 4G and globalization has many other preoccupations and the agricultural issues have gone on the background. However each time we eat anything anywhere we must remind us that the nature mother has gifted us one economic activity, which keeps us surviving evidence and going and continues adding natural aesthetics to our habitats. Agriculture is the standing evidence of fertility and capacity to regenerate of mother earth. We therefore must conserve water and soil y, flora and fauna and help those who do farm activates...
Recently center amends the three farm bills and led to the mass protest which is against the will of farmers. The agricultural sector is facing a crisis today. Farm suicide is steadily on rise. Mores then 3.5 lakh farmers have committed suicide since 1995 various reasons are failure of monsoon, high burden of debt, GMC, personal issue beside Govt policy.
I. The agricultural productivity in India has increased, cost of production has increased but selling price doesn't follow the trend. The cost of input has also increased due to cut back in agriculture subsidies putting heavy burden on farmers.
II. Public expenditure on agriculture has gradually decreased. Credit supply to farmers has also seen a diminishing trend. Farmers are denied loans due to lack of collaterals and thus they largely move towards money lenders.
III. APMC act HAA failed to ensure fair pries to farmers. Produce are being procured at much lower prices than they actually deserve.
The solution thus lies in curing the disease rather than treating the symptoms. The beginning could be made by formulating an appropriate National Agricultural Policy. Steps should be taken to arrange for adequate credit facilities to farmers on reasonable terms. A culture of SHG and Co-operative could be promoted for this purpose. Modern scientific agriculture should be promoted so that farmer’s income could rise. National Agricultural Market launched recently will go a long way in ensuring fair and remunerative price to farmers for their produce. The time has come to take visible steps towards realizing the Dreams of second green revolution.
