The ongoing anti-terror operation by security forces in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district entered seventh day on Thursday.
The search operation launched by a joint contingent of police, CRPF and army in the dense Akhal forest area of Kulgam last Friday has turned into one of the longest anti-militancy operations in the Valley in the recent past.
Sources said two terrorists have been killed and four army men injured in the operation so far. However, there has been no official confirmation yet.
Officials said security forces are encountering stiff resistance as militants are reportedly taking advantage of the rugged terrain, dense forests, and natural cave hideouts in the forest area, making the operation particularly challenging.
Security forces are deploying drones to target suspected militant hideouts in the forested area, while Army helicopters continue to hover overhead, monitoring the operation.
Security officials said that due to the complexity of the terrain, the operation is likely to prolong.
“Troops are exercising maximum caution to avoid casualties while ensuring that no terrorist escapes,” said a senior police officer.
Additional reinforcements have been deployed in the vast area to prevent any attempts of escape by the holed-up terrorists.
The area has been under a strict security lockdown as the operation continues.
