In a remarkable gesture of service and compassion, the Assam Rifles organised a comprehensive medical and veterinary camp at Government High School, Hanch, located in the remote Doda District of Jammu & Kashmir. The camp, held on August 18, 2025, was specifically aimed at addressing the healthcare needs of the Gujjar and Bakkarwal communities, who live in some of the most rugged and inaccessible terrains of the region.
Due to poor road connectivity and lack of medical infrastructure, residents of the Hanch area often face significant difficulties in accessing even basic medical or veterinary care. Recognising this critical gap, Assam Rifles brought together a team of qualified doctors, paramedics, and veterinary experts to provide much-needed services — all under one roof.
A Lifeline for Remote Communities
The camp offered a wide range of services including:
General medical check-ups
Free distribution of essential medicines
Treatment and vaccination of livestock
Awareness sessions on hygiene, nutrition, and preventive healthcare
For the Gujjar and Bakkarwal population — primarily pastoral and livestock-reliant communities — the veterinary component of the camp proved especially valuable. Many villagers brought their animals for treatment, acknowledging the rare opportunity to consult experts without having to travel miles on foot.
A local resident shared his appreciation:
“It’s the first time such a facility has come this deep into our area. We are grateful to Assam Rifles for thinking about both our people and our animals.”
Winning Hearts and Building Trust
The initiative reflects Assam Rifles’ continued commitment to inclusive development and its vital role in extending government outreach to underserved and marginalized populations. More than just a healthcare mission, the camp also helped to foster goodwill, trust, and communication between the armed forces and the local communities.
An Assam Rifles official stated:
“Health is the foundation of any thriving society. By reaching out to these remote areas, we aim to build bridges of trust and ensure that no community feels neglected.”
The camp concluded with a promise of future engagement and continued support, leaving behind not just medical relief, but a lasting sense of care and connection.
