In a solemn and heartfelt tribute, Lieutenant General Vikas Lakhera, AVSM, SM, Director General of the Assam Rifles, led the force in honoring the memory of the valiant soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty on July 31 in previous years. The commemoration was marked by ceremonies held across various Assam Rifles formations and units, reinforcing the commitment of the force to never forget its fallen heroes.
The Director General, along with all ranks of the Assam Rifles—the oldest paramilitary force of India—offered salutations and prayers to the martyrs, recognizing their courage, unwavering dedication, and service to the nation. Floral tributes were laid, and the national flag was flown at half-mast at multiple locations, signifying the collective grief and deep respect the force holds for its brave personnel.
“We remember and honor those who laid down their lives so that others may live in peace. Their sacrifice is a solemn reminder of the price of freedom and security,” said Lt Gen Lakhera in a statement. “Their legacy will live on through the spirit and duty of every man and woman who dons the Assam Rifles uniform.”
The observance of Remembrance Day on July 31 has become a tradition within Assam Rifles, reflecting the force's ethos of loyalty, sacrifice, and service. Events included candlelight vigils, wreath-laying ceremonies, and remembrance parades, not only in operational bases in the Northeast but also in peace stations across India.
Families of the martyrs were also remembered and acknowledged, with the Director General reiterating the force's continued support and solidarity with the next of kin of those who gave their all in the service of the nation.
The Assam Rifles, known as the Sentinels of the Northeast, has a distinguished history of valor and sacrifice spanning over 185 years. From counter-insurgency operations and border management to humanitarian aid and disaster relief, the force has served India in some of the most challenging terrains and conditions.
As the country moves forward, the Assam Rifles remains steadfast in its commitment to protect the nation’s unity and integrity, inspired by the courage of those who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day.
“Their memory shall forever guide our steps,” said Lt Gen Lakhera, as the force once again vowed to uphold the values for which the bravehearts laid down their lives.
