Peren , July 9: In a significant initiative to strengthen sustainable agriculture and rural livelihoods, the Assam Rifles under Spear Corps, in collaboration with the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Peren and ICAR–Research Complex for North Eastern Hill Region (NEH), organised a Farmers–Scientists Interaction Programme and distributed agricultural inputs under the North Eastern Hill (NEH) Scheme in Peren district of Nagaland.
The programme brought together agricultural scientists, veterinary experts, Assam Rifles personnel and local farmers on a common platform to promote scientific farming practices, improve livestock management and enhance agricultural productivity through the adoption of modern technologies.
During the interactive sessions, experts shared practical knowledge on climate-resilient agriculture, scientific crop cultivation, soil health management, integrated pest control, animal nutrition, disease prevention and sustainable livestock rearing. Farmers were also encouraged to adopt improved farming techniques to increase productivity while protecting natural resources.
As part of the initiative, agricultural inputs were distributed among farmers under the North Eastern Hill Scheme to support cultivation and strengthen rural livelihoods. The assistance is expected to help farming communities improve agricultural output and adopt better farming practices.
Veterinary specialists also conducted awareness sessions on livestock healthcare, vaccination, disease management and scientific animal husbandry, highlighting the crucial role of healthy livestock in improving household incomes and ensuring long-term rural sustainability.
Officials said the programme aimed to bridge the gap between scientific research and grassroots farming by enabling direct interaction between farmers and subject experts. Such engagements help farmers gain access to the latest agricultural innovations while addressing local challenges through practical solutions.
The initiative reflects the Indian Army's continued commitment to community development beyond its security responsibilities. Through collaborative programmes with research institutions and government agencies, Assam Rifles continues to support socio-economic development in remote and border regions by promoting self-reliance, sustainable agriculture and capacity building.
Participants appreciated the programme, stating that access to scientific guidance and improved agricultural resources would help enhance farm productivity, strengthen livestock health and improve rural livelihoods across the region.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to continue working together for sustainable agricultural growth, farmer empowerment and inclusive rural development in Nagaland.
