Guwahati, Aug 6: Continuing its intensified crackdown on cross-border smuggling and narcotics trafficking in the Northeast, the Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, carried out two successful joint operations in Mizoram and Assam, recovering contraband worth over ₹4.11 crore and arresting two alleged drug peddlers.

In the first operation, Assam Rifles personnel, in coordination with the Customs Department, intercepted a major consignment of 22,400 kilograms of smuggled areca nuts at Kawlbem in Saitual district of Mizoram.
Officials said the seized areca nuts are valued at approximately ₹1.56 crore. The consignment, believed to have been smuggled across the international border, has been handed over to the Customs Department for further legal action and investigation.
In a separate operation in Assam, Assam Rifles, acting on specific intelligence and in coordination with the state police, recovered narcotic substances worth around ₹2.55 crore.
During the operation, two alleged drug peddlers were apprehended, dealing a significant blow to organised narcotics trafficking networks operating in the region. The recovered contraband and the arrested individuals have been handed over to the police for further investigation and legal proceedings.
Security officials said the twin operations reflect the continued commitment of Assam Rifles to dismantle cross-border smuggling and drug trafficking networks that pose a threat to regional security and public health.
The force reiterated that coordinated intelligence-based operations with civil agencies and state police will continue to target organised criminal syndicates involved in the illegal trade of narcotics and other contraband across the Northeast.
