Aizawl, July 19: Continuing its efforts to promote a drug-free society, the Assam Rifles organised an awareness lecture on the prevention of drug abuse at Government Siaha College in Siaha district, Mizoram, to educate students about the dangers of substance abuse and encourage healthy, responsible lifestyles.

The programme, held on July 17, was aimed at sensitising young people to the growing threat of narcotics and strengthening community participation in the fight against drug addiction.
During the session, resource persons highlighted the harmful effects of drug abuse on physical and mental health, explaining how addiction can damage an individual's education, career, family life and overall well-being. Students were also informed about the social and economic consequences of substance abuse, including crime, unemployment, family breakdown and the long-term impact on society.
The speakers drew attention to the increasing challenge posed by narcotics, particularly in border areas, and emphasised the importance of collective action involving educational institutions, families, law enforcement agencies and local communities to curb the menace.
Students were encouraged to stay away from drugs, make informed life choices and actively contribute to spreading awareness among their peers. The interactive session also enabled participants to seek guidance on preventing addiction and supporting individuals struggling with substance abuse.
Assam Rifles officials reiterated that empowering young people through awareness and education is one of the most effective ways to combat drug abuse. They urged students to become ambassadors of a drug-free society and play a proactive role in building healthier and safer communities.
The awareness programme was well received by students and faculty members, who appreciated the initiative for addressing a critical social issue and reinforcing the importance of vigilance, education and community participation in the fight against drugs.
