September 17, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Shillong, Sep 16: The Assam Rifles organised a lecture-cum-sensitisation programme on HIV/AIDS and the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017, at Headquarters Directorate General Assam Rifles (HQ DGAR), Laitkor, on Wednesday.

The programme was conducted by the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS) with the objective of creating greater awareness among Assam Rifles personnel and their families about HIV prevention, transmission, treatment and the social challenges associated with the disease.
Officers, staff, personnel and family members participated in the awareness session, which also focused on addressing stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. Participants were briefed on the importance of accurate information, preventive measures, timely testing and access to appropriate treatment and support.
The session also highlighted key provisions of the HIV and AIDS (Prevention and Control) Act, 2017. Particular emphasis was laid on the rights and protections provided under the legislation to persons living with HIV, including safeguards against discrimination and measures aimed at protecting their dignity and access to healthcare.
A total of 512 personnel and family members participated in the programme, including 150 family members.
The initiative provided an opportunity for participants to interact with health professionals and strengthen their understanding of HIV/AIDS, its prevention and the legal framework governing the rights of affected persons.
The Assam Rifles said the programme reaffirmed its commitment to promoting health awareness, dignity and the overall well-being of its personnel and their families. Such sensitisation initiatives also contribute to creating a more informed and supportive environment around public health issues.
