Jiribam, Aug 22: In a major operation against narcotics trafficking, the Assam Rifles, under the Spear Corps, in coordination with the Manipur Police, intercepted a boat carrying contraband at Jiribam and apprehended six individuals.
The operation, based on intelligence inputs, involved a swift pursuit of the suspected boat before security personnel successfully intercepted it. A substantial quantity of narcotics was recovered during the operation.
According to the security forces, the seizure included 90,000 Yaba tablets, estimated to be worth around ₹27 crore, along with 48 grams of heroin valued at approximately ₹28.80 lakh.
The recovery represents a significant setback for narcotics trafficking networks operating in the region. The large quantity of Yaba tablets, in particular, underscores the scale of the trafficking attempt and the continuing challenge posed by synthetic drugs in the Northeast.
The joint action also highlighted the importance of close coordination between the Assam Rifles and State Police in countering organised criminal networks. Intelligence sharing, surveillance and rapid response enabled the forces to intercept the suspected consignment before it could reach its intended destination.
The six apprehended individuals have been taken into custody for further investigation. Authorities are expected to examine the source and intended destination of the contraband, as well as possible links with wider drug-trafficking networks.
The operation comes amid sustained efforts by security and law-enforcement agencies to disrupt the movement of narcotics through the region and prevent drugs from reaching vulnerable communities.
Officials said the successful seizure demonstrates the continued commitment of the security forces to tackling the illegal narcotics trade and strengthening security.
The recovery of narcotics worth more than ₹27 crore is being seen as a major operational success and another blow to trafficking networks, reinforcing ongoing efforts to make Manipur and the wider Northeast safer and drug-free.
