Aizawl, Aug 6: In a major blow to cross-border smuggling networks, the Assam Rifles, in a joint operation with the Customs Department, Aizawl, seized 22,400 kilograms of smuggled areca nuts worth approximately ₹1.56 crore in Mizoram's Saitual district and apprehended two individuals.

According to officials, the operation was carried out on August 4 at Kawlbem in Saitual district, based on specific intelligence inputs regarding the movement of contraband through the border region.
During the operation, joint teams intercepted two goods carrier trucks and recovered 320 sacks of areca nuts weighing 22,400 kilograms.
The seized consignment has an estimated market value of ₹1.56 crore, officials said.
Two persons allegedly involved in the smuggling operation were apprehended on the spot.
Following the seizure, the recovered contraband, the two trucks and the apprehended individuals were handed over to the Customs Department, Aizawl, for further investigation and legal proceedings under the relevant laws.
Officials said the operation dealt a significant blow to organised smuggling networks operating along the international border and underscored the effectiveness of coordinated intelligence-based operations between security forces and enforcement agencies.
The Assam Rifles reiterated its commitment to preventing cross-border smuggling and other illegal activities in the Northeast, stating that sustained operations will continue to safeguard the border areas and curb the movement of contraband into the country
