Atrocities by Pakistan Army in Baluchistan

Reports reveal that human rights organizations have highlighted instances of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and violations of rights during periods of military rule in Pakistan

The Pakistan Army, as an institution, has garnered a negative reputation and has been a subject of debate and criticism at various points in the world. This reputation is attributed to several reasons, including allegations of disloyalty, corruption, and interference in the civil democratic setup. Throughout Pakistan's history, there have been periods of military rule and martial law, resulting in instances of human rights violations and political suppression. Critics argue that the military's influence has led to the subjugation of the entire country. It is claimed that some military officers have bypassed democratic rules and regulations, leading to a demoralization of the civilian government, with accusations that a significant portion of the country's wealth remains under the control of the military.
Reports reveal that human rights organizations have highlighted instances of extrajudicial killings, enforced disappearances, torture, and violations of rights during periods of military rule in Pakistan. The inhumane approach of the Pakistani army has drawn international criticism and raised concerns about the state of democracy and human rights in the country. The recent upheaval in the government, seemingly influenced by the military's power, serves as a prominent example of military rule. It is perceived that the military of Pakistan wields significant influence in selecting and rejecting civilian governments. The current Pakistan Prime Minister is often viewed as being influenced by the Pakistani army, and any deviation from their agenda may lead to their stepping down, as has been the case with former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
One of the regions with significant human rights concerns in present times is Baluchistan, a province in Pakistan. The area has been marred by violence, insurgency, and allegations of human rights abuses for a long time. The conflict in Baluchistan involves various stakeholders, including local insurgent groups, government forces, and sectarian violence. There have been reports and allegations of human rights violations in the region. The situation in Baluchistan has been a matter of concern, with some expressing worries about suppression, dominance, and potential human rights violations by the Pakistani Army. It is essential to investigate and address such allegations through proper channels and ensure the protection of human rights for all individuals in the region. Few of the facts would be heart watching
Enforced disappearances in Baluchistan are a response to the people's demand for political and economic rights, leading to arrests, torture, and the unexplained disappearances of the Baloch population. Such actions represent a grave violation of human rights and are condemned by the international community. According to reports from 2022, which has been declared as the most dreadful year for Baluchistan, the Pakistan army forcibly disappeared 629 individuals, with 195 cases of extrajudicial killings and 187 incidents of reported torture. These figures are based on the report of Paank, the human rights organization of the Baloch National Movement. The report further states that the Counter-Terrorism Department and Frontier Corps, working under the aegis of the Pakistan Army, subjected hundreds of Baloch’s, including innocent women and children, to enforced disappearance, collective punishment, fake encounters resulting in death, and torture in various areas of Baluchistan. This issue remains one of the most crucial challenges faced by the people of Baluchistan.
Alongside the cases of enforced disappearances, there are also reports of extrajudicial killings involving suspects militants or individuals associated with separatist movements. Allegations of torture, detention, and displacement of civilians in Baluchistan have also been documented. Moreover, there is a complete ban on freedom of speech and expression in the region.
Baluchistan enjoyed a semi-autonomous status even before the creation of Pakistan in 1947. Since the 1950s, the Balochi people in Pakistan have been voicing their demand for the independence of Baluchistan. However, over time, this demand has evolved to seek more autonomy, economic freedom, and protection of fundamental rights.
Despite its efforts to destroy Balochi's social fabric, the Pakistan Army has failed to fully impose its writ in the province. In fact, its actions have exacerbated ethnic tensions in the region. Baloch political leaders, human rights activists, lawyers, journalists, and student leaders have become targets of enforced disappearances, abductions, arrests, torture, and other ill-treatment.
The province under the dominance of Pakistan demands urgent attention, and the international community must address the political, social, and economic rights of its people. The struggle for independence and the tragic incidents of innocent killings must be acknowledged by the UN and world leaders, leading to the recognition of Baluchistan as a separate entity on the world map. The United Nations must compel Pakistan to adhere to all conventions on forced disappearances and torture, rather than accepting its brazen lies. Silence on the matter only encourages the perpetration of atrocities against innocent civilians. India should take a lead in this fight against the infringement of human rights and state-sponsored violence in Baluchistan.
