Authorities Seize Decomposed Meat and Raw Fish in Jammu

February 19, 2026 | BK News Service

Jammu, Feb 18: Ahead of Ramadan, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Jammu & Kashmir launched a major enforcement drive against unsafe food practices, recovering 5 quintals of decomposed meat and 6,000 kilograms of raw fish in Jammu.

The operation, conducted by the Food Safety Organisation Jammu Division, involved a surprise inspection at M/s India Fish Company, Warehouse, Jammu. The team, supervised by Commissioner FDA J&K Smita Sethi and led by the Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety, was assisted by the District Administration, J&K Police, and Jammu Municipal Corporation.
Officials discovered around 150 cartons of raw fish transported from Andhra Pradesh on February 10, 2026, without proper refrigeration or temperature control. Preliminary lab analysis indicated the fish was unsafe for human consumption. Approximately 500 kilograms of decomposed meat were also seized, found rotten, spoiled, and emitting a foul odor.
Legal proceedings have been initiated under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, including violations of prohibitory orders, insanitary conditions, and unsafe storage. The establishment’s licence is liable for cancellation, and further action is being taken under Sections 56 and 58 of the Act.
Commissioner Smita Sethi stated that Health Minister Sakina Itoo is closely monitoring enforcement, directing zero tolerance against food adulteration. She urged strict compliance, particularly during Ramadan, when demand for meat and fish rises.
The FDA has advised citizens to remain vigilant and report suspected adulteration or unsafe food practices via the toll-free number 104 for immediate action.
