A designated TADA Court in Jammu on Tuesday dismissed the bail applications of two accused in the assassination of Mirwaiz Moulvi Mohammad Farooq, who was gunned down in Srinagar in the early 1990s. The court ordered that both the accused be lodged in Central Jail.
The assassination of Mirwaiz Farooq, a prominent religious and political figure, had sent shockwaves across the Valley more than three decades ago. The case was investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation, which held Hizbul Mujahideen commanders Abdullah Bangroo and Rehman Shigan responsible for hatching the conspiracy. Their operatives, identified as Ayub Dar, Javid Bhat, and Zahoor Bhat, carried out the attack.
While both Bangroo and Shigan were later killed in encounters with security forces, operative Ayub Dar was arrested soon after the incident and sentenced to life imprisonment. However, Javid Bhat and Zahoor Bhat remained fugitives for over 33 years before being apprehended in May 2023.
The two had filed bail applications on medical grounds, which came up for hearing before the TADA Court today. After considering the arguments, the court rejected their pleas and remanded them to judicial custody.
