May 11, 2026 | Nisar Malik

Uri, May 10: A wild black bear was successfully captured by the Wildlife Department in Noorkha village of Uri area in Baramulla district, bringing relief to residents who had been living in fear following repeated sightings of the animal in the locality.

Officials said the operation was carried out after locals reported movement of the bear in and around residential areas, prompting immediate action by the Wildlife Department team. The animal had reportedly strayed into human habitation, raising concerns over potential risk to life and property.
The capture operation was conducted with caution to ensure the safety of both villagers and the animal. After several hours of effort, the team managed to safely immobilise the bear without causing harm and shifted it for further evaluation and eventual release in a suitable forest habitat.
Residents of Noorkha village had earlier expressed concern over the frequent appearance of wild animals in the area and had urged authorities to take preventive measures. The successful capture has brought a sense of relief among locals, who appreciated the swift response by the Wildlife Department.
Officials said that the increasing movement of wild animals towards human settlements is being monitored closely, and necessary steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in the future, including habitat assessment and awareness drives in vulnerable areas.
The department also advised residents to remain cautious and immediately report any wildlife sightings to avoid untoward incidents.
