CM Omar reviews LD hospital project
Srinagar, April 18: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today inspected the ongoing construction of the Extension Block at Government Lalla Ded Hospital in Srinagar and reviewed the progress, execution strategy, and infrastructure development of the project.
The upcoming facility is being developed as a dedicated Infertility and Gynaecological Oncology Centre at the premier maternity hospital and is expected to significantly enhance specialised maternal and neonatal healthcare services across Jammu and Kashmir.
During the inspection, the Chief Minister assessed the pace and quality of construction work and directed officials to ensure timely completion while maintaining high construction standards. He stressed the importance of close coordination among all concerned departments to avoid delays and ensure smooth execution.
He was accompanied by Advisor Nasir Aslam Wani, Principal and Dean Government Medical College Srinagar Dr. (Prof) Iffat Hassan, Administrator GMC Srinagar Mohammad Ashraf Hakak, Medical Superintendent LD Hospital, and senior officers from PWD (R&B), J&KERA Kashmir, among others.
Officials briefed the Chief Minister that the project is being executed under the World Bank-funded Jhelum Tawi Flood Recovery Project at an estimated cost of ₹118.22 crore. The facility is being constructed as a G 5 attic structure with a built-up area of about 11,640 square metres and will include 117 specialised beds for adults and infants.
The centre will house advanced medical infrastructure including modular operation theatres, ICU, HDU, NICU, labour and delivery suites, IVF laboratories, and fetal intervention facilities designed in line with modern national and international healthcare standards.
Officials also highlighted that the building is being constructed with advanced base isolation technology using 43 friction pendulum isolators, ensuring high seismic safety in Zone-V conditions. The design has been vetted by premier technical institutions for structural safety and quality assurance.
The Chief Minister was informed that foundation work and ground floor structural framework are complete, while installation of base isolators and pre-engineered building works are progressing in multiple phases. Procurement of key medical equipment and hospital systems has also begun.
Reaffirming the project’s importance, the Chief Minister said the facility will be a major milestone in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the region and will ensure better access to specialised, high-quality care for women and newborns across Jammu and Kashmir.
