Democracy is a system of government in which the people have the power to choose their leaders and make decisions about their lives. It is based on the principles of equality, freedom, and justice. Democracy is essential for human and social development and well-being, and it is a key factor in promoting peace and security. For Jammu and Kashmir, International Day of Democracy hold significance for a number of reasons. The UT is a Muslim-majority region which was roiled by political turmoil since independence in 1947. The region had a long history of violence, and the people of Jammu and Kashmir were denied their full democratic rights for many years. In 2019, the Union government revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. This move was widely appreciated including by the Kashmiris themselves, who saw the existence of Article 370 as a violation of their democratic rights. We can also use social media and other platforms to raise awareness of the good changes and restoration of democratic rights in Jammu and Kashmir. International Day of Democracy is an important opportunity to celebrate the values of democracy and to show solidarity with those who are fighting for democracy around the world. It is especially important this year to show solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir, who have finally got their full democratic rights.
