Srinagar, Aug 7: The Chinar Book Festival, held at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC) from August 2 to 10, 2025, brought a wave of cultural and social engagement to the Kashmir Valley. Among the highlights was the vibrant “Know Your Army” stall set up by the Chinar Corps, drawing large crowds, especially youth and women.
The event showcased the Indian Army's efforts under the Chinar Corps to foster peace and harmony through educational, vocational, and empowerment programs. Special attention was given to the contributions of Army Goodwill School children, women from Kupwara, and youth from the Chinar Yuva Centres in Baramulla.
The Indian Army has identified women’s empowerment as a key pillar for sustained peace in the region. As part of this mission, Skill Development Centres (SDCs) were established in remote parts of North and South Kashmir. Notably, during the Mission Tiranga campaign, women trained in these centres produced over 12,000 national flags adorned with hand-crafted Kashmiri Ashok Chakras.
The Chinar Yuva Centre in Baramulla has become a beacon of hope for local youth, offering certified training in diverse fields such as:
Hospitality & Retail
Fashion Designing
IT & Computer Literacy
Beauty & Wellness
Community Journalism
Creative Arts & Music
Martial Arts & Self-Defense
Customized Printing
Food Processing
The Centre emphasizes practical skills and real-world experience. For instance, Kojo Coding has enabled students to explore customized printing on t-shirts, bottles, and mugs. The Food Processing Unit, established in 2020, now produces high-demand local items, strengthening the regional supply chain and showcasing Kashmir’s agricultural heritage.
The Centre also nurtures creativity and financial independence through Self Help Groups (SHGs), which are engaged in plastic recycling, food processing, and printing. Products like handbags and laptop sleeves are crafted from waste plastic, with profits shared among the women involved.
The Centre’s women empowerment programs have achieved significant milestones. Eight women from Baramulla were recently placed at TATA Wistron in Bengaluru, with support from Aseem Foundation and Needs Manpower Pvt. Ltd. Others have secured positions in prestigious brands such as Khyber Himalayan Resort, The Lalit Grand Palace, Mahindra Motors, and D-Mart.
The Centre has also initiated free martial arts and self-defense training, preparing women not just for jobs, but for life. Many are now competing at state and national levels, with the placement rate of girls in 2024 rising over eight times compared to the previous year.
By offering certified training through agencies like NSDC, MES, and NIELIT, the Chinar Yuva Centre continues to prepare youth for mainstream employment, steering them away from separatist ideologies. Its multi-domain, inclusive approach has made it a cornerstone in Kashmir’s journey towards peace, prosperity, and empowerment.
