Climate Crisis in Kashmir

January 12, 2026 | Athar Islam

The Kashmir known for its beauty and divine attraction is today under the grip of climate change being brought out by human greed. This changing climate has had a devastating effect on the people of Kashmir for several years. 'And this certainly is the proof that we have turned this Kashmir which looks like a heaven into hell.' The sharp rise that we're now experiencing is a warning signal from our natural system. For infrequent precipitation and sporadic snowfall—sometimes nearly non-existent—and a dramatic temperature spike are all indicators pointing to unnatural interference with nature’s equilibrium. We have no one to blame for this but ourselves. Playing with nature Even for our own sake, we played so dangerously with nature and it looks at us in such a way.

This is the Land that was once green and forested… now inching dangerously towards destruction… Courtesy human greed and apathy. This land is needing mankind´s help, and realises that if one does not consider their acting and start taking better care of the earth, then this situation will probably get worse with time. Environmental pollution has become a killer weapon in the 21st century. And no, it was not exclusive to first world or foreign nations but now alsa we have its emerged front a paradise like Kashmir Vally. Kashmir used to get fair amount of and well distributed snowfall in winters. This heavy snow was a source of beauty as well as an imperative for water and ecosystem balance too. Nowadays snowfall is occasional and in the majority of the time it almost doesn't exist. This is entirely due to the fact that we are becoming more and greedier and careless, thus fertile grounds for none but deep rooted problems while sabotaging the future generations.
Our environment is getting worsen day by day due to under control deforestation, growing vehicles and other harmful pollution. The environmental is screaming for us, begging is not to further harm it. But we are still blind to greed and indifference. We also are burying our heads in the sand about natural resources and we see the consequences of such neglect front and center. We have the awareness programmes in schools, colleges and universities every year but in real life nothing changes. Now these programs are just for show. “Words, words, we are always talking but when it comes to do something, we go back. We are all taught in a hundred different ways how to safeguard the environment, but when it comes to our own actions, everyone blames someone else. As a result, such issues as global warming are on the rise. Our issues have been taken to an unhealthy level, this is a recipe for disaster in the future. In plain terms, all these problems in the making are nothing but a soft warning, when we still have time to wake up.
World wars, factory works and release of harmful gases are the key factors behind these climate change. Even though these issues are worldwide, we can observe the consequences of them on a local level. Glaciers melt, river water flow changes and seasons are becoming unpredictable due to this worldwide climate change.
It is sad that human beings believe they own the Earth, when in fact, we are just stewards of it. If we do not reform our way of thinking and living, generations to come will never forgive us. We need to plant more trees, save water and electricity, minimize plastic use and go with eco-friendly choices. Nothing short of a collective effort by governments, organizations and ordinary people will resolve this issue.
It is worth mentioning that, in the end, the Earth is not totally destroyed now but here we are at a very decisive point. It is sending us a desperate message that if we act now, much can yet be saved. If you see the earth as a mother and indeed she is, then as her child your biggest responsibility is to protect your mother. If we dismiss her admonishment now, this silence will remain tomorrow.
