The cold wave intensified in Kashmir as minimum temperatures dropped significantly with Pahalgam and Shopian emerging as the coldest places on Wednesday.
A MeT official said Pahalgam recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius during the preceding night, a drop from minus 2.7 degrees Celsius during the previous night.
Shopian experienced an even lower temperature of minus 4.6 degrees Celsius.
In Konibal, the temperature settled at minus 3.4 degrees Celsius, minus 3.9 degrees Celsius in Anantnag, minus 3.6 degrees Celsius in Pulwama, and minus 2.9 degrees Celsius in Kulgam.
Sonamarg in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district recorded a minimum of minus 3.6 degrees Celsius.
In Srinagar, the minimum temperature dropped to minus 0.6 degrees Celsius, down from 0.7 degrees Celsius during the previous night.
“Qazigund, the gateway town to Kashmir in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.4 degrees Celsius, a significant drop from -0.8 degrees Celsius during the previous night and 2.4 degrees Celsius below normal for this time of the year,” the MeT official said.
The ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district recorded a low of minus 2.6 degrees Celsius against the minus 2.4 degrees Celsius recorded the previous night.
Director MeT, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad said there is a possibility that the weather would remain cloudy while light snowfall is expected in Bandipora and Kupwara higher reaches from November 29 late evening.
“These higher reaches may also receive light snowfall on December 01 while the rains would lash plains in between December 2 and 3,” he said adding all the WDs affecting J&K are feeble.
According to MeT official, the weather would remain generally dry from December 4-6 while another light wet spell is expected between December 7 and 8 during which light rains and light snowfall in the higher reaches at isolated places are expected.
Meanwhile, the MeT has also issued an advisory, advising the tourists, travellers, transporters to follow administration and traffic advisory.
